The Future of Office Equipment Standardization

The INCITS/Office Equipment Technical Committee focuses on the characterization and standardization of performance of office equipment to facilitate customer comparison and uniform marketing claims. This provides both home and office users the ability to make informed tradeoffs when purchasing office equipment. Areas of study have traditionally focused on toner and ink cartridge yields, print/scan/copy speed, and image and color quality metrics. These metrics have proven helpful in avoiding the generation of competing and confusing measurement methods internationally, which has helped avoid conflicting regulations in the international marketplace.

However, with the blending of the home and office environments resulting from the Covid 19 pandemic, more users are looking to understand performance tradeoffs of devices for their home compared to the devices that they have traditionally used in the office.

The standards that INCITS/Office Equipment develops and supports provides users these tools to understand and balance tradeoffs when looking to establish blended home and office environments. With the increasing focus on security and environmental impacts, other potential future areas of interest in Office Equipment standardization include basic device security requirements, 3D printing and scanning performance, and color reproduction metrics. INCITS/Office Equipment can also help provide customer facing evaluation metrics in these areas.

To get involved with the development of these standards, join the INCITS Technical Committee on Office Equipment. For more information on membership and the work in this technical committee, visit https://www.incits.org/committees/w1.
